Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders

This three-part series provides WIC professionals with the information and skills they need to successfully conduct Illinois WIC's screening and brief intervention to prevent alcohol exposed pregnancies, which can lead to children born with a Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).

The prerecorded webinar provides an overview of FASD and its impact on the developing fetus and background information on the Illinois WIC FASD Screening and Brief Intervention project.

FASD Studies of Hope, the second course in the series, allows participants to hear from WIC professionals who were the first to incorporate FASD screening and brief intervention into standard WIC care. In addition, the course introduces WIC staff to birth mothers and adoptive mothers of children with FASD and the struggles that accompany their lives because of alcohol use while pregnant.

The final course, Practical Application of the FASD Screening and Brief Intervention, provides participants with the knowledge needed to conduct WIC's FASD SBI and opportunities to practice it under the guidance of their supervisors.
